The Rick Dees Top 40 comes in three varieties:

Top 40 Song Charts

Top 40 Music (also known as Top 40 Songs, Top 40 Hits, Top 40 Charts) is a radio format that is common in the United States and Canada that focuses on playing current and recent popular music as determined by the top 40 music charts.

Top 40 radio was linked to a commodity: the 45 RPM single record, the music that filled juke boxes. Marketing was very lucrative in the fifties, and disk jockeys took illegal bribes to play certain songs, in a scandal known as payola. LP record albums would soon dominate the hit music industry and by the seventies, a typical Top 40 song was a single taken from an LP, often shortened to fit a three-minute time slot.

The term Top 40 Hits is also used to refer to the actual list of hit songs, and to refer to pop music in general. The term has also been modified to describe Top 50; Top 30; Top 20; Top 10; Hot 100 (each with its number of songs) and Hot Hits radio formats, but carrying more or less the same meaning and having the same creative point of origin.

Each week, between two and seven songs would typically enter and leave a radio station’s Top 40 songs list. Chart runs might be only a week or two, or several months. In the heyday of Top 40 Songs, only the biggest hits of a given year would remain on the charts for 15 weeks or more. Songs that left the charts would be added to the pool of "oldies." Listeners could identify seasons and semesters by the songs they remembered on the radio. Various brands of Top 40 include Billboard Top 40 Charts, America's Top 40 Songs and Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 Music.

Rick Dees Weekly Top 40 History

Rick Dee began his weekly Top 40 Countdown, still currently in syndication, in 1983. The Rick D's Weekly Top 40 is now heard each weekend by more than 70 million people around the world, including virtually every city in the United States, 125 countries, 27 massive ships at sea, XM Satellite Radio, and the Armed Forces Radio Network, and is distributed domestically by Triton Media Group’s Dial Global Radio. Dees’ familiar voice and multitude of characters have become a mainstay of the American psyche and have even extended into Beijing, China becoming the first English speaking radio show to entertain Chinese listeners on weekends. The Countdown is available in three different versions: Hit Radio (for contemporary hit radio stations), Hot Adult (adult contemporary radio stations) and Rhythmic (Rhythmic Contemporary/Rhythmic Adult Contemporary radio).

The Rick Dees Top 40 is also sometimes referred to as American Top 40 Songs, America Top 40 Hits, Weekly Top 40 Songs or the Weekly Top 40 Charts.

Rick Dees in Radio

Dees became the hottest property in radio when he began hosting the top rated morning radio show in Los Angeles on KIIS-FM in July of 1981. In a short time, he turned KIIS-FM into the #1 revenue generating radio station in America with an asset value approaching one-half billion dollars. With unprecedented ratings success, Rick Dee garnered many accolades, including Billboard Radio Personality Of The Year ten years in a row.

Dee's got a big kick start from his radio hit "Disco Duck", a satirical disco novelty song performed by then Memphis disc jockey Rick Dees and His Cast of Idiots. It became a number-one hit on the Billboard Chart for one week in October of 1976.
